Components for Packaging Automation & Material Handling

Packaging equipment builders, integrators and industrial buyers need to match the handling method to the package at the point of pickup. A rigid carton, a filled soft bag and a thin film sheet present different contact and support requirements.

01 / Requirements

Separate cartons, soft bags and thin materials

For cartons, identify a usable panel and note folds, seams, tape, labels and changes in surface condition. State whether the carton is empty or filled and how it is presented. SB bellows cups and SFP flat polyurethane cups have carton or paper-box application references. Compare their selected shapes and connections with the actual package.

For flexible bags, describe the filled shape, available contact region and how the package changes shape during pickup. SBLP provides a multiple-bellows cup reference for soft packing bags. For film or paper sheets, SFT offers a separate flat-cup reference. These are different starting points for selection, not one cup recommendation for every packaging material.

  • Record whether the package is empty, filled, open or sealed.
  • Describe folds, seams and the area where contact is permitted.
  • Provide the material, dimensions and allowable package deformation.

02 / Requirements

Compare vacuum contact with mechanical gripping

A vacuum inquiry needs information about the contact surface, its shape and the available vacuum arrangement. Include the package condition at pickup and any requirements for reliable release at placement. Review cup dimensions, material and connection options against each packaging format rather than using package weight as the only input.

Where a rigid feature is available for mechanical gripping, describe its geometry, access and permitted contact force. Parallel grippers provide opening, stroke and dimensional references for a mechanical option. Jaw design, package clearance and the actual contact arrangement determine whether that option is suitable for the task.

03 / Requirements

Plan the tool layout and format changes

List the packaging formats the tool must handle and identify which contact or mounting positions change between formats. Include approach clearance, adjacent machine parts and the placement destination. Use PEP profile and mounting references to discuss the positions of cups or grippers within the EOAT frame.

Define the air or vacuum supply, hose routing and pickup and release controls. State the required movement and timing as application inputs. For hygiene-sensitive packaging, include the applicable material and cleaning requirements in the inquiry so they can be assessed for the selected components.

  • Identify shared and format-specific pickup points.
  • Provide the mounting space and required adjustment positions.
  • Describe pickup, transfer, release and any material-contact requirements.

Application RFQ

Prepare a packaging component RFQ

Describe the package formats and pickup conditions in the Contact form. If you have shortlisted cups, grippers or mounting components, add them from their product pages and review the existing RFQ list.

Include these details in your inquiry message. Leave unknown values or part numbers open for confirmation. Mention available drawings and ask how to share them; the form has no file-upload function.

Information to include

Frequently asked questions

Can the same cup handle cartons, soft bags and film?

Do not assume the same configuration suits all three. Compare the panel or contact area, flexibility, package shape and pickup support. SB and SFP provide carton references, SBLP provides a soft-bag reference and SFT provides a film and paper reference.

When should I consider mechanical gripping?

Describe any accessible rigid feature, the approach space and the permitted contact conditions. Review the gripper opening, stroke, jaw arrangement and mounting dimensions against that feature before choosing a mechanical option.

What should I provide for a tool that handles several package sizes?

List the smallest and largest formats, their pickup contact areas and the positions that change. Include the adjustment space, movement and placement conditions so the mounting layout and component choices can be discussed together.

Does a packaging application reference confirm food-contact approval?

An application listing does not confirm approval for the selected configuration. Include the material-contact, cleaning and documentation requirements in the inquiry, particularly where a component may touch food or a sensitive package surface.
